Commonly used welding electrodes for ductile iron castings include Z408 electrodes, Z438 electrodes, H08Mn2SiA welding wire, E5016 electrodes (i.e., J506 electrodes), and E5015 electrodes (i.e., J507 electrodes).

What type of welding rod is used for welding ductile iron castings?

Common welding rods used for ductile iron castings include Z408, Z438, H08Mn2SiA welding wire, E5016 (also known as J506), and E5015 (also known as J507). The selection of these welding rods and wires is primarily based on their crack resistance, machinability, and suitability for cold or hot welding.

Z408 and Z438 welding rods: These two welding rods, mainly composed of high vanadium and nickel iron, significantly improve the crack resistance and machinability of the weld, especially suitable for welding ductile iron.

H08Mn2SiA welding wire: Used to build up a transition layer on the ductile iron bevel before welding. Process parameters are welding voltage 18~20V, welding current 95~105A, and welding speed 0.28~0.33cm/s. After the ductile iron piece is properly built up, it is precisely positioned with carbon steel, and then welded using E5016 or E5015 welding rods.

E5016 (J506) and E5015 (J507) welding rods: These two welding rods are often used for welding ductile iron to carbon steel, especially in preheated welding processes, which can prevent angular deformation at the weld joint and are suitable for double-sided welding.

In addition, when welding ductile iron, preheating is usually required. The preheating temperature is generally between 500~700℃ to reduce welding stress and prevent crack formation. Slow cooling treatment is also required after welding to ensure welding quality.
